I am a self-driven, enthusiastic, and passionate pharmaceutical scientist specializing in medicinal product formulation and manufacturing innovations. My definite major purpose is to transform the pharmaceutical science institutions/schools in Uganda as a major driver of world-class pharmaceutical product innovations and development of robust manufacturing systems in Africa, through high-impact research and graduation of highly skilled generations of pharmaceutical scientists
Novimed Syrup is one of the products of Medical Research Centre supported by the Ministry of Science,
Technology and Innovation for management of Covid-19 and other complications such as cancer.
I played the following roles:
Tazov is one of the products developed at Busitema University by a team in the department of pharmacology for Covid-19, supported by Science, Technology and Innovations Secretariat – Office of the President (STI-OP), Government of Uganda. During the product development, I consulted in the following through both a seminar workshop and practical training (Topic: Formulation Considerations for Herbal Medicines):
Research Topic: Design, Development, and Characterization of Drug Delivery Systems for Ugandan Antimalarial Plants - Artemisia annua, Vernonia amygdalina, and Microglossa pyrifolia
Expected Research Outcomes:
Progress:
Key Experiences: Development of pharmaceutical dosage forms such as tablets, capsules and Novel Drug Delivery Systems/technologies; operation of various equipment such as tableting press, hydraulic press, dissolution tester, friability tester, disintegration tester, UV spectrophotometer, and others; determination of product shelf-life; Extraction of starch and gums from natural sources for pharmaceutical excipient development; determination of physicochemical properties of excipients and other aspects of pharmaceutical excipient development; Excipient modification using various engineering techniques; formula drafting during medicine design; product formula and production process optimization using Quality by Design approach; etc
General Skills: Excellent at transferring knowledge and skills to a group of people through practical demonstrations and presentations (strong pedagogical skills) Extraordinary ability to accommodate harsh conditions and persevere in difficult situations to excel and realize goals especially when most people are giving up Excellent at organization and design of facilities/ equipment from scratch or little information available I also can critically analyze/ screen ideas and develop promising ones into tangible products or proposals that are capable of attracting funding
Specialized Areas: Selection of the best plants/herbs for the next stage of product development based on literature review; Evaluation of physicochemical properties of herbal extracts; interpretation and utilization of the properties profiled from preformulation studies for pharmaceutical dosage form selection and design, optimization of product critical quality attributes using Quality by Design (QbD) approach, conversion of efficacious active components/ crude extracts either synthetic or natural in to world-class medicines; design and optimization of manufacturing processes or systems for a new product; development of quality control parameters or specifications for new products and conduct of such analysis; generation and analysis of laboratory data (including in vitro dissolution data and its use to predict bioavailability and establish pharmaceutical equivalence); handling of laboratory animals such as mice and rats in ethical manner, and ability to perform basic procedures such as administration of test samples, drawing of blood or other samples from the animals for further analysis; and other related areas
Other Skills:
Languages: English (Proficient user both written and spoken), Lugbara (mother tongue)
Computer: Very good at Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) and many other computer programs including Mendeley and endnote for automatic citation and referencing, GraphPad prism for statistical data analysis
Research: Competent in Conduct of Laboratory Experiments (Medicinal Formulations and Analysis), Excellent in Grant Proposal Writing, Good in Data Analysis and Presentation, Etc
Teaching: Very good pedagogical skills especially in Lesson Planning and Delivery
