Senior Radio Network Planning and Optimization Engineer

MTN Uganda
01.2014 - 01.2015
  • Project coordination for radio access projects, such as site build projects, upgrades projects, among others, had a budget of more than USD 3 million.
  • Managed a number of site cutover projects in a timely and cost-effective manner while adhering to the quality standards.
  • Responsible for the deployment, activation, optimization, analysis, and improvement of the performance of LTE, UMTS, and GSM networks in the Northern and Western regions. Latency (50 ms to 15 ms), speed (15/5 Mbps for DL/UL to 32/25 Mbps for DL/UL), and data penetration/coverage were achieved.
  • Conducted regular audits of networking assets, ensuring compliance with industry best practices and regulatory standards.
  • Weekly performance reviews with responsibility matrix.

Planning and Optimization Engineer II and III

MTN Uganda
01.2011 - 01.2013
  • Planning, Deployment and optimization for the Northern region in Uganda, under MTN (a leading Telecommunications Company in Uganda) I surveyed (location selection and height of tower), selected equipment (type of base station, number of transceivers, antenna type, Cable type and length), lead the implementation and commissioning of more than 250 sites. These were basically new sites so we had to do acceptances including sign offs and drive/walk tests.
  • Network forecasts in terms of capacity planning which is derived from the current traffic and utilization key performance indicators like congestion, this led to more than 1000 transceivers being added on the network and this reduced congestion in my region to below 1% from 5% on regional level
  • Project resource support was another key role. As the team lead of six engineers, one of my roles was to assign resources to different projects or actually be the resource. The projects included, among others, site builds, capacity upgrades, and site cutovers, to mention but a few.
  • For cases where we needed procurement to get involved, having had a background with a procurement qualification, I used to be the lead in raising specifications and Terms of Reference for the goods, services, and works required for the region, as well as assist in preparing technical evaluations and contractor evaluations.
  • Drive testing, as and when required, was another major role. This is a process where you drive to the field to check on the health of the network with KPIs like coverage, call setup, and handovers. This would help improve KPIs like call setup and congestion by more than 15%.
  • It was my duty to ascertain that all sites and switches have the latest software, and to update those that do not; this would help improve KPIs, like call setup, by more than 20%.
  • For all new sites or upgrades it was my role to provide E1 routing and E1 Mapping on the switch this would in the end improve capacity on the network. During my time more than 500 E1 maps were provided.

Site Planning Engineer II

MTN Uganda
01.2006 - 01.2011
  • Designing and planning new and upcoming site deployments, including but not limited to surveying, location selection, line-of-sight paths since we used microwave for most sites, equipment selection, capacity determination, and releasing work orders. More that 100 sites were planned
  • Maintaining correct data related to radio planning and optimization of the network on the planning tools, and frequently matching planned and live network parameters for my assigned nodes.
  • Changing radio parameters on-site with the purpose of optimizing the usage of network infrastructure (Network Optimization), looking at the top 10 worst cells, helped to improve the network.
  • Escalation of switch alarms and faults to the switch engineers through the incident management system, and following up on their resolution.
  • Weekly meeting reviews for the regional performance.
