  • Solution: the same teams for specific activates were used, but handled a given site at a time.
  • Challenge: handling asbestos
  • Solution: we sourced a specialized NEMA registered provider to manage the hazardous waste and ensured that he delivered it to approved landfills
  • Lessons learnt:
  • Managing many sites concurrently can be expensive is human resources and material deliveries are not planned and synchronized well
  • Asbestos should be stored in sealed manner, transported in sealed containers and disposed-off in designated places

  • Design review of project design, drawings and Bills of Quantities.
  • Quality control through joint road and construction material testing done with the Central Materials Laboratory for MoWT – Kireka.
  • Geotechnical investigations for the load bearing soils and road sub grade material as well as imported G8 gravel from borrowpit.
  • Measurement and validation of construction works as submitted in the sub-contractors’ payment invoices and preparation of the payment certificate.
  • Interpretation and revision of working drawings to ensure quality of the project works as well as timely completion of the project in regards to the project duration.
  • Review and interpreting the BOQs with respect to the project drawings and issuance of site instructions on established variations, quantify the works executed “as is” and also establishing the extent of overall works achieved.
  • Monitoring of the contractor’s resource and work plan for timely project execution, optimal resource management as well as issuance of site instructions for work progress in line with the contractual requirements.
  • Ensuring safety on site and to the general public, organizing the work force as well as the site plant and equipment.
  • Budgetary control and monitoring of the project to ensure correct financial management.
  • Organizing periodic project progress review meetings and preparation & submission of periodic site progress reports to the Project Engineer
  • Monitoring the daily site works which include: basement excavations, retaining wall construction, basement water pumping, concrete mixing, casting and curing, setting out columns for the structure, steel distribution and fixing and masonry works among others.
  • Scope of works: Demolitions and carting away, excavations for foundations, substructure works, substructures, R.C. frame, walling, and finishes, Electrical, Mechanical, HVAC works
  • Lessons learnt:
  • Geotechnical investigations and socio – economic surveys should be done during the design phase to minimize issues arising therefrom that can cause huge variations in contract prices.
  • Project Work plans should be made with consideration for operational incongruities
  • Further still, it’s important to detect possible variations to contract in terms of works and costs and notify the client well in time to decide on the way forward.
