Achievements:

Pre-Hospital Emergency Care:

  • Coordinated referral (intraregional and interregional) of patients in nine (9) ambulances supported under the national ambulance services scheme.
  • Supervised staff (drivers and ambulance assistants) on the nine (9) ambulances in the region that are supported under the national ambulance services scheme.
  • Held training for the ambulance assistants on basic emergency care principles and offered monthly continuing education sessions to ambulance assistants.
  • Coordinated patient transfer schedules, ensuring prioritization according to triage codes.
  • Ensured that ambulance usage guidelines are followed including proper documentation of care of patients, safety for ambulance teams and accountability for fuel.
  • Managed logistical issues arising with ambulances including scheduling for service and maintenance of ambulances.

Facility-based Emergency Care:

  • Supported the training of 29 healthcare workers from 12 health facilities in the Lango region and 21 healthcare workers from the Acholi region in a training of trainers.
  • Supported the distribution of job aides and HMIS tools to all facilities trained in the Lango and Acholi regions including triage kits distributed to 15 facilities in both regions.
  • Supported the cascade of the training of trainers to other healthcare workers in 10/12 health facilities in the Lango region.
  • Ensured continued supply of HMIS tools to facilities that requested more HMIS tools.
  • Headed the organization of Continuous Medical Education sessions within the EMS department in liaison with other partners and later supported the implementation of the EMS ECHO program.

Administrative:

  • Attended monthly regional COVID-19 task force meetings and interacted with various stakeholders in the COVID-19 response about the EMS regionalization agenda.
  • Held one-on-one meetings with DHOs from all districts in the region to discuss the operations of EMS within the districts.
  • Attended EMS weekly meetings to discuss the functioning of EMS in the various regions; achievements, challenges and solutions.
  • Conducted an assessment of Emergency Units at four (4) General hospitals in the Lango region and six (6) general hospitals in the Acholi region.
  • Conducted an EMS support supervision activity of 8 health facilities within the Lango region.
  • Regularly reported EMS data from the Lango region through weekly, monthly and quarterly reports.
  • Offered guidance to District Health Officers on the EMS processes and liaised with them for coordination of EMS in the region.
  • Completed a value for money audit for EMS within the region with officers from the Office of the Auditor-General.
  • Attended the regional health sector performance review meeting and presented the EMS regional agenda.

Responsibilities/ Duties:

  • Participated in the implementation of the NIFTY and YEFE Studies, following the existing protocols, SOPs and the ICH-GCP guidelines.
  • Participated in the recruitment, clinical assessment and inclusion of 240 participants into the NIFTY study.

The NIFTY study participants at inclusion, viraemia, day 10 and day 28 and day 365 visits. These included blood samples for serum, PBMCs, HIV RCT, CD4+ cell counts and any other tests deemed important.

The YEFE children’s study participants attended their one-year follow-up and unscheduled clinic visits. These include blood samples for serum and other investigations as required.

  • Completed case report forms according to the available guidelines, ICH-GCP and SOPs, including resolution of queries arising from data monitoring and entry processes for both the YEFE and NIFTY studies.
  • Participated in the clinical assessment of participants both in the NIFTY and in YEFE studies during the scheduled and unscheduled visits.
  • Participated in the referral process of participants who needed further care to institutions collaborating with the study clinic and did follow up on the participants to find out the health outcomes after receiving care at the referral points.
  • Made phone-call follow-ups to participants about various issues including progression of symptoms of Adverse Events reported during clinic visits, adherence to medications prescribed at the clinic, and reassurance about any other health issues arising.
  • Participated in various study-related (NIFTY and YEFE) SOP training, plus review and updating of existing SOPs.
  • Together with the clinic team, carried out a successful dissemination exercise for the results of the adult sub-study of the YEFE study.
  • Together with the community social workers and the site investigator developed communication and community engagement strategies, and correspondences to stakeholders and sponsors.

Leadership Positions

April 2019 to Date: General Secretary, Uganda Rugby Medical Society (URMS).

  • Together with the other Executive Committee members, ensure that all rugby games are provided with skilled medical attendants.
  • Ensure that the members of the society are possessed up-to-date first aid skills by organizing training and regularly reviewing their training credentials.
  • Mobilize; convene both the executive committee and general meetings. Ensure minutes at all meetings are recorded and availed to members.
  • Correspond to the Uganda Rugby Union and all other URMS partner organizations.

October 2016 to January 2018: Treasurer, Federation of Uganda Medical Students’ Association (FUMSA)

  • Was responsible for the financial administration and bookkeeping of FUMSA through being a signatory to the FUMSA bank account, preparation of financial year budget, preparation and presentation of financial reports, collecting FUMSA incomes and controlling expenditures.
  • Reviewed all the budgets for FUMSA projects and events and ensured that they are in line with the financial internal operating guidelines of FUMSA.
  • I was able to oversee all the fundraising activities for the federation including those carried out through the small working groups and offer support in laying fundraising strategies for various activities.
  • As part of the Executive Board, supervised the development and implementation of all FUMSA projects under the standing committees including the development of proposals, monitoring and evaluation and writing of project reports.
