- As a systems agronomist with the AVSI Foundation under the skilling Youth for Employment in Agri-business (SKY) project with support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, I was mandated with providing tailor made direct trainings to youth in high-tech horticulture production, quality and phytosanitary standards. Linking trained youth to employment opportunities in horticulture value chain. The project goal was to enhance sustainable creation of employment for youths in the agribusiness sector

- As a consultant with The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), under the Price-Quality Transmission and Quality Upgrading Project (BDN AoW2), I led component 2 of the project that aimed at understanding how quality premiums in dairy value chains are transmitted (or fail to be transmitted) to producers, and under what conditions quality upgrading can occur. The project combined detailed micro-data from smallholder dairy farmers, traders, and milk collection centers (MCCs) with a value-chain intervention to generate evidence for both policy and private-sector stakeholders. The intervention targeted 100 milk traders, 50 of whom were the treatment group (received quality premia based on the quality of milk delivered daily to MCCs. The study findings showed that quality based payment system significantly improved quality of milk along the value chain and if scaled up would reduce regulatory efforts in enforcement for compliance as actors get self-driven to supply quality milk because of a bonus paid for quality.
- In close collaboration with the Dairy Development Authority Ministry of Agriculture, Animal industry and Fisheries, NARO and district local governments of participating districts
- Developed a standard operating procedure (SOP) for the milk analyzer model MA 815. I also led development of the poster for creating awareness to farmers and milk vendors about the availability of milk analyzers at MCCs to test quality of their milk.
- Calibrated 140 milk analyzers before distributed to MCCs to ensure collected results are accurate and consistent with international standards.
- Distributed and installed analogue milk analyzers to 140 selected milk collection centers in the Southwestern milk shed.
- Trained dairy value chain actors, comprising the MCC managers, MCC milk assistants and chairpersons of dairy cooperatives or proprietors for private MCCs, and government extension officers on the use of the milk analyzers and harmonized East African raw milk standards.

Obtaining lists and GPS locations of about 420 agricultural input dealers as the basis for a cluster randomized factorial experiment, and as a sampling frame for about 4,200 farmers included in the study.
- Assisted in the preparation and field testing of the questionnaire (Agro-input dealer census and baseline questionnaire and the farmer baseline, midline and endline questionnaires).

- The Manafwa Watershed Restoration and Stewardship (MWARES) project was funded by DOB-Ecology in the Netherlands and implemented by a consortium of four partners; Makerere University, Kyambogo University, Wageningen University and Research and Africa 2000 Network-Uganda. The aim of the project was to restore resilience and stimulate stewardship in the Manafwa watershed. This was because of inappropriate farming practices and use of marginal land leading to increasing frequency of soil erosion, landslides, shrinking forest reserves, as well as floods in the low lying areas surrounding the mountains. These are as a result of; rapid population growth which puts high pressure on the land and its resources, leading to reduced land sizes, loss of soil fertility and decreasing yields. Integrated farm planning (PIP) approach that is proven to stimulate quick, wide-scale change in people as stewards of their natural resources was core to realizing the objectives of the WARES project.
- I was responsible for providing strategic leadership to the project, coordinating implementation of activities following the PIP principles of empowerment, integration and collaboration, and PIP drivers ; conscientisation, intrinsic motivation and genuine participation, and preparing reports on results. The key achievement was building farming households’ resilience to shocks of climate change through adoption of indigenous agroforestry trees in the Manafwa watershed and stimulating stakeholders’ collective action towards restoration of degraded areas of the watershed.
- Prior to this responsibility, we together the project team had study tour in Burundi to benchmark hoe PIP approach had intrinsically motivated and stimulated wide-spread change in people as stewards of the land and were also trained in the step by step process of PIP creation.
- Provided strategic guidance to the project staff according to the designed and agreed strategy; supervised project staff and appraised their performance in line with the project guidelines. As a result; over 12000 households were trained in PIP approach, created their PIPs and were empowered in resilient farming practices, built capacity of 26 schools in environmental education to mentor future stewards of natural resources, initiated and promoted landscape restoration intervention in 9 sub counties in the watershed including Mount Elgon National Park, facilitated signing of stewardship agreements between Uganda Wildlife Authority and 12 parishes for controlled access and conservation of natural resources in the Mt Elgon National Park, facilitated establishment and coached 30 Integrated Farming Groups to enhance market access for their produce, built the capacity of 38 villages in propagation, establishment and management of indigenous tree nurseries to enhance access to planting materials of such trees which grow well with coffee and bananas but also effective in restoring degraded step landscape and lastly facilitated establishment of the Manafwa Watershed restoration and conservation platform (MWARECoP) where stakeholders are invited to plan and work together on the restoration of the natural resources in the watershed, as a basis for sustainable food production and quality of life.

- Policy action for sustainable intensification of Ugandan cropping systems (PASIC) project was funded by the Kingdom of the Netherlands embassy with the overall goal of contributing to improved household incomes, livelihoods and food and nutrition security in Uganda through the sustainable intensification of cropping systems. The “Policy action for sustainable intensification of Ugandan cropping systems” (PASIC) project was to stimulate action in selected policies and programs, relevant for agricultural intensification of smallholder production systems, through evidence-based research and strengthening of capacities of relevant institutions. Contributed to output one of the projects; generate evidence on key constraints and opportunities for intensification of two cropping systems through agronomic yield studies to stimulate action in policies relevant to crop intensification.
- Led the component of conducting evidence based research on the agronomy of mandate crops (potatoes and rice) and generated and communicated evidence on key constraints and opportunities for intensification. Quantified yield gaps in potato and rice cropping systems, their causes and recommended stepwise interventions required to address them. The evidence generated and communicated stimulated action for development of the national seed, extension and fertilizer policies in Uganda.

- The five year project was implemented by URC in partnership with RECO Industries, Ltd to support production and distribution of therapeutic and supplementary foods to reduce malnutrition in vulnerable children, pregnant and lactating women, and adults living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda. The project focused on increasing the range and market reach of the food products, improving product supply chain and quality management, sourcing crops from indigenous farmers, and promoting improved agricultural practices for smallholder farmers. The PIN project was funded by USAID under Feed the Future initiative aimed to improve the economic well-being of smallholder farming households through improved crop quality and market linkages.
- I recruited and organized farmers into producer groups of selected crop enterprises; beans, ground nuts, maize and fruits in Bugiri district. 150 smallholder farmers were recruited and organized into 15 farmer producer groups.
- I sensitized the farmer group on project goals, work approaches, group dynamics, leadership and registered them relevant government authorities to operate as legit groups..
- I trained the farming groups in agronomy of selected enterprises, integrated soil fertility management using farmer field schools approach and the end of the project, farmers’ yields had increased by 3 folds and directly improved their livelihoods.
